FEATURED APPEARANCES & INTERVIEWS

MORNIN’ BARBADOS

I appeared on a special segment of Barbados’ equivalent of Good Morning Britain - Mornin’ Barbados - to talk with host Trisha Hinds about why I wrote The Racial Code and it’s relevance to race relations in the UK.

In conversation with professor troy lorde, Barbados

In November 2023, I spoke with Professor Troy Lorde (Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus) about The Racial Code and our lack of progress in debating and advancing racial justice in the UK. We talked “coconuts”, the complaint to OfCom against Channel 4’s Jon Snow and being “superficially Black”.

BBC POLITICS LIVE

In October 2022, I appeared as a panellist on BBC Politics Live along with Conservative Tim Laughton MP, Labour’s Stella Creasy MP and the Conservative commentator Albie Amankona. We debated whether Rishi Sunak’s appointment as Prime Minister signalled that race was no longer a barrier to progress. I also talked about my book The Racial Code.

the school that tried to end racism

I was an expert advisor, along with fellow academic Professor Rhiannon Turner, on this two-part documentary which aired on Channel 4 in Summer 2020. IT follows a group of 11- & 12-year-olds as they explore their racial bias and take part in a series of activities to improve their understanding of race and racism. The documentary won a series of awards including:

  • Winner, BAFTA (Reality & Constructed Factual, June 2021)

  • Winner, Rose d’or Award (Category: Reality & Factual Entertainment, October 2020)

  • Winner, Japan Prize 2020 (The Japan Foundation President’s Prize, October 2020)

  • Winner, MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards (Category: Race & Ethnicity, non-scripted, October 2020)

I discussed the Phenomenal Women exhibition, the barriers faced by Black female scholars, the implications of the lack of Black women in academia and why it matters along with Professor Funmi Olonisakin, Vice-President and Vice-Principal International and Professor of Security, Leadership and Development at King's College London, and Professor Tracey Reynolds, Professor of Sociology at the University of Greenwich.

Exposing the lie within: legitimate culture, organisational protectionism & the quest for racial justice in higher education

British Educational Research Association (BERA) Keynote Address - October 2017

In this keynote address for BERA’s annual conference, I examine the various performative ways in which universities act as though they are moving the dial on racial justice and working to improve the experiences of Black and minority ethnic groups but show how, in reality, little is changing.
