Nicola Rollock is Professor of Social Policy & Race at King’s College London. She is also a consultant and public speaker.
Nicola is widely known for her research which examines, for the first time in the UK, the career experiences of Black female Professors and the exhibition that led on from this Phenomenal Women which went on display at London’s Southbank Centre during October 2020. The exhibition is currently on display at the University of Cambridge.
Nicola is Specialist Adviser to the Home Affairs’ Select Committee’s ‘Macpherson 22 Years On’ Inquiry, Senior Advisor (Race & Higher Education) to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and Distinguished Fellow of the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. She is a member of Wellcome Trust's Diversity & Inclusion Steering Group and their newly formed Anti-racism Expert Group and, the British Science Association’s Equality & Diversity Advisory Group.
In Summer 2020, she appeared in the BAFTA-winning two-part Channel 4 documentary ‘The school that tried to end racism’.
In October 2020, following nomination by Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Nicola was included in the Duke & Duchess of Sussex's list of Next Generation Trailblazers recognised for "challenging prejudice and their contribution to British society".
The Baroness said: “She’s inspired me over the years because of all of the work she’s done around race relations and, more importantly, what’s happening within education. Her latest work within the UK is looking at how many black women are professors in this country. Nicola is passionate about the critical role of education to inspire young black women to achieve their potential. I admire Nicola for her consistent work around anti- racism, equality and inclusion.”
In December 2019, Nicola was selected by Times Higher journalists as one of eleven scholars globally to have influenced the debate in higher education. She was nominated, in 2018, for a National Diversity Award under the positive role model category and was winner of the 2016 PRECIOUS Award for Outstanding Woman in Professional Services for contributions to race equality. She was recognised, in 2015, as a Woman of Achievement by the Women of the Year Council.
Nicola is published in a number of international books and journals and is the lead author of The Colour of Class: the educational strategies of the Black middle classes, which won second prize in the 2016 Society for Educational Studies’ Annual Book Awards. Nicola is currently working on her first sole authored book The Racial Code to be published by Allen Lane in 2022.
